One frame from a sequence of a man throwing a lance, this image is number 107 in Eadweard Muybridge's published studies. The photographs were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to split fast action into successive moments. Collected in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, copyrighted in 1881, the series helped lay the groundwork for motion pictures. Worth noticing is how a single position in the throw, frozen mid-motion, shows what the eye could never separate on its own.
