A twisting somersault, shown as a run of positions frozen in mid-air, distinguishes this plate from Muybridge's better-known horse studies. It was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, and appeared as number 106 in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, which gathered the series under one title. Muybridge used a row of cameras fired by trip wires to capture movements too quick for the eye to follow, and the acrobat's body turning over itself shows how finely the method could break down a single action. The print is an albumen print, a process common for photographic prints of the period.
