A man mid-swing with a pick is the subject of this plate, one of the human movement studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge was working for former California governor Leland Stanford, who had hired him to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground, and the same camera setup was turned to people performing everyday and athletic actions. Published in 1881 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the image breaks a single swing into consecutive positions, which made it a useful reference for artists and scientists studying movement.
