Two men grappling in a wrestling hold are frozen mid-struggle in this albumen print by Eadweard Muybridge, taken from a sequence he made of human and animal motion. He shot the original exposures at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras that tripped as the subject passed in front of them. The images were published in 1881 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book whose plates let viewers study positions that the eye could not easily separate in real time. Look closely at the sequence of poses, which breaks one bout into a set of consecutive moments.
