Plate 115 in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows athletes and acrobats holding a series of poses, captured at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Those sessions began at the Palo Alto property of Leland Stanford, who had hired Muybridge to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Muybridge used a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to freeze movement in fractions of a second, and he later turned the same method toward people. The sequence is worth studying as a record of the body in motion, not only as a set of portraits.
