Plate 118 in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows athletes in unusual, off-pattern poses, the kind the title "Irregular" refers to. The series was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when Muybridge arranged rows of cameras fired by trip wires to freeze movement too quick for the eye. The project grew out of the question of whether a galloping horse ever lifts all four hooves at once, and this plate shows how his method extended from animals to people. It is an important step toward the moving pictures that followed.
