Muybridge's "Athletes" is a sequence of figures captured mid-motion, part of the larger body of work he made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879 for Leland Stanford's horse-motion experiments. The plate appears as no. 117 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, published in 1881, and its record lists the subjects as acrobatics, athletes, and human locomotion. Muybridge set up multiple cameras along a track and triggered them in rapid succession, so a single subject could be broken into a row of consecutive frames. The images helped settle a question that had puzzled painters and scientists for generations: what the body actually does during a stride, a leap, or a fall. Their influence reached forward to the development of motion pictures.
