Plate 116 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* (1881) shows an athlete moving through a run of irregular, acrobatic poses rather than the even strides of a horse. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, where a row of cameras fired as the subjects broke trip wires. The albumen print carries his 1881 copyright and appears in the book's index of illustrations. Its subject headings, acrobatics and human locomotion, show how his motion studies extended from animals to people.
