Among the human studies Eadweard Muybridge made at Palo Alto, this print shows athletes caught mid-posture rather than in ordinary walking or running. It was issued in 1881 as plate 114 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book gathering his series made in 1878 and 1879 on the Palo Alto property associated with Leland Stanford. Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track and tripped their shutters with wires, breaking a single movement into a sequence of separate exposures. The result shows how the body actually holds itself through a stretch of action, a question painters and sculptors had long answered from observation and guesswork.
