Few pictures in the Palo Alto series show people at sport as directly as this sequence of fencers, listed as number 112 in Muybridge's book on animal attitudes. He made the exposures in 1878 and 1879 with a row of cameras triggered by tripwires, then published the results under copyright in 1881. The studies began as a question about how horses move, and the lunges and parries here were broken into frames the eye could not follow at full speed. The plate shows how that inquiry widened to take in human bodies.
