Two men square off in this series of boxing poses, one of several plates Eadweard Muybridge made of athletes at Palo Alto, California. The sequence is numbered in the 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it sits among his studies of movement. Muybridge had begun his motion work in 1872 at the request of Leland Stanford, who wanted to know whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. To answer that, Muybridge set up rows of cameras with shutters tripped by wires, so that each exposure caught a fraction of a second. Pictures like this one turned those experiments toward the human body and helped lay the groundwork for the moving images that followed.
