Numbered No. 2 in its series, this color lithograph reproduces a sequence of boxers in the style of Eadweard Muybridge's zoopraxiscope discs. Muybridge designed the device, a projector that threw painted images from rotating glass disks onto a screen so that a series of still poses appeared to move. He had begun studying human and animal motion with multiple cameras in the late 1870s, and by the early 1890s his sequences were being shown as popular entertainment. The print is a useful record of how early motion pictures were built from individual frames.
