This color lithograph shows a couple waltzing, a subject Eadweard Muybridge chose for the zoopraxiscope, the projector he developed to show sequences of motion. Its copyright line and number, 35, suggest it belonged to a published series of his movement studies from the early 1890s. Muybridge built these images from photographic studies of people in motion, and his work helped lay groundwork for early motion pictures. The figures are posed in a series of small steps, which were meant to blur into movement when projected.
