Among the many Muybridge horse studies, this one is the horse named Abe Edgington, photographed at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 to settle a question that had divided horsemen for decades: whether all four hooves ever leave the ground at once during a gallop. Muybridge lined the track with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the path as the horse ran past. The resulting sequence of images answered the question and became a landmark in the history of motion pictures, since Muybridge later projected such series as moving images.
