Muybridge's horse-and-rider plates are among the earliest scientific sequences of photographs of animals in motion. Taken in the 1870s and 1880s, they were produced in part at the request of Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether all four hooves of a galloping horse leave the ground at once. Muybridge set a row of cameras along a track, each triggered by a tripwire as the horse passed, so the plate records a series of short moments in a single stride. Worth noticing is how these sequences later fed the development of motion pictures, since the idea of breaking movement into frames and replaying them is central to film.
