Eadweard Muybridge's sequence of a horse and rider stands out because it breaks a single gallop into 24 frames, each showing a slightly different moment of the stride. Muybridge made such series in the late 1870s and 1880s, using rows of cameras triggered by tripwires so that the shutters fired in quick succession. The images helped settle a long-running argument over whether all four hooves ever left the ground at once, and they gave early filmmakers a model for breaking motion into separate pictures. Looking across the frames, you can follow how the rider's body rises and falls with the horse's rhythm.
