A standing horse skeleton, posed upright like a living animal, appears as plate number 194 in Eadweard Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book of sequential photographs made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. Muybridge produced the series for Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a trotting horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. The skeleton image pairs the study of movement with the animal's underlying anatomy, showing the bone structure that made those motions possible. Muybridge copyrighted the book in 1881, and his use of rapid camera exposures helped lay groundwork for motion pictures.
