This print is distinctive for its subject: a horse's skeleton posed in the midst of a trot, rather than a living animal. Eadweard Muybridge made it in Palo Alto, California, where he worked in the late 1870s on experiments to settle whether a galloping or trotting horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. The image was published in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* (1881), which paired such sequences with anatomical studies. Viewers today often find it striking because it turns a fleeting gait into a fixed study of bone and joint.
