A trotting horse's skeleton, shown in the instant it leaves the ground, makes this picture distinct from the living-animal studies that usually accompany it. Eadweard Muybridge made the image in San Francisco around 1881 as one of the plates in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book drawn from his experiments at Palo Alto in 1878 and 1879. Those experiments used a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to capture a horse's stride in rapid succession, and the sequence helped settle a long-running dispute about whether all four hooves leave the ground at once. The skeletal version was meant to show the underlying bone structure during that same moment.
