A horse's skeleton is shown mid-stride, with all four hooves lifted clear of the ground, a moment the eye could not catch at speed. Eadweard Muybridge made the photographs at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, working for Leland Stanford, the former governor and racehorse owner who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all its feet off the ground at once. The series was published in 1881 as *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where this image appears as plate 197. It is an early step toward the motion pictures that followed.
