Few images in the Muybridge series show a horse's bones rather than its living body. Here a horse skeleton is caught in the air, leaving the ground, and the bare frame makes the skeletal mechanics of a jump easy to read. Muybridge made it at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras with trip wires to capture rapid sequences, a project backed by Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. The plate appeared in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* (1881), which turned these studies into a reference book for artists and scientists.
