This print shows a horse skeleton caught in mid-leap, with the title noting that the figure has left the ground. It comes from Eadweard Muybridge's Palo Alto experiments of 1878 and 1879, which were commissioned by Leland Stanford to test whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge published the results in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* in 1881, where this image appears as plate 202. The series helped establish the sequential photography that later led to motion pictures, which is why the image is often cited in film history.
