A horse's skeleton is shown at the moment in a gallop when all four hooves leave the ground, a phase of motion that was hard to see with the eye alone. The picture comes from Eadweard Muybridge's 1878 and 1879 work at Palo Alto, California, where he photographed horses and other animals with a row of cameras triggered by tripwires, at the request of Leland Stanford, who wanted to settle whether a trotting horse ever lifts all its feet. Muybridge published the results in 1881 as *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, and this print comes from that book. The skeletal form links the pictures to the anatomy of movement, which helped make his sequences useful to artists and to early work on motion pictures.
