This horse skeleton, shown running with a hoof in contact with the ground, is plate 200 in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 volume of studies made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The series grew out of Leland Stanford's question of whether a galloping horse ever has all four feet off the ground, answered with cameras triggered by threads stretched across the track. Printed as an albumen print, the picture lets viewers study the skeleton's leg mechanics at a single instant.
