A blank card bearing handwritten catalog notes in the hand of Eadweard Muybridge, the English-born photographer who studied motion, offers a look at his working records. In 1878 he produced his well-known series of a galloping horse for Leland Stanford, which showed that all four hooves leave the ground at once, and he later projected such sequences as moving images with his zoopraxiscope. Notes like these show how he organized the large body of plates behind that work. The card's plainness is what makes it worth noticing, since it records the cataloging rather than the pictures themselves.
