Broken Blossoms (1919) was one of the few films D.W. Griffith made in a small, intimate scale rather than the epic sweep of The Birth of a Nation, and this lobby card points to that difference. Lillian Gish and Richard Barthelmess star in a story set in the crowded Limehouse district of London, where a gentle Chinese immigrant falls for a mistreated young woman and the film ends in violence. Lobby cards like this one were displayed in theater lobbies to advertise upcoming features, and hand-coloring added warmth that black-and-white stills could not offer. Worth noticing is how the film's soft, tinted look sets its mood apart from the stark realism of its era.
