Few silent-era American films drew as much attention as D.W. Griffith's *The Birth of a Nation*, and this 1936 poster advertises a reissue that the headline bills as the film's first appearance with sound. Originally released in 1915, the film follows two families through the Civil War and Reconstruction, and its close-ups, cross-cutting, and large-scale battle scenes influenced the grammar of later filmmaking. It also drew fierce protests and calls for censorship because of its racist portrayal of Black Americans and its heroic treatment of the Ku Klux Klan.
