Titled for both the projector and the animal it set in motion, this color lithograph shows a galloping horse as the zoopraxiscope's subject. Eadweard Muybridge, who copyrighted the image, invented the device to project the sequences of motion he had photographed with multiple cameras, beginning with his studies of horses in California in the 1870s. Projected from glass discs painted with successive poses, these sequences gave audiences some of the earliest convincing illusions of movement. The print's later exhibition at Williams College, under the title *Moving Pictures*, places it within the history of early film.
