Here a couple sits wrapped in an embrace while the rest of the audience watches the screen, the kind of private moment that a darkened movie house made easy in 1928. Mabel Dwight, a Realist lithographer who turned her eye to everyday American life, drew the scene in the same period when movie palaces were drawing huge crowds into cities and towns. The print survives in a second state and is signed in pencil, and it shows how the picture house had become a place for courtship as well as entertainment.
