Few posters from the late 1890s tie motion pictures to a brass band as directly as this chromolithograph for the American Entertainment Co., which lists both moving pictures and military and marching bands among its subjects. Early film was still a novelty then, and traveling exhibitors often paired it with live music and variety acts to draw crowds to halls and tents. The sheet came from the Donaldson Litho Co., a firm known for large, colorful theatrical advertising, which helps explain its bold color and generous size. It shows how early cinema was sold as spectacle in its own right.
