This chromolithograph stands out for naming its showman so plainly: Lyman H. Howe's "new magic pictures" are the headline, set in bold color. Howe, born in 1856, toured the country with programs of projected films shown in opera houses, town halls and other venues, and posters like this one were a main way to draw crowds ahead of each stop. The Courier Company of Buffalo, New York, printed the sheet, and its copyright notice dates it to 1898. It was later shown in an exhibition at Williams College of Art on the uneasy relationship between American art and early film, which is one reason it is studied as both advertising and graphic design.
