This chromolithographed poster advertises Lyman H. Howe's "new marvels in moving pictures," a traveling film show that toured American towns in the late 1890s. Its handwritten note, "Battle on land," and its subject heading tie it to the Spanish-American War of 1898, when the public was hungry for war images. Howe, who lived from 1856 to 1923, built his business on the appeal of projected motion in halls and tents, and posters like this one were meant to draw crowds with bold color and promises of spectacle. Today it offers a glimpse of early film marketing, when the new medium still relied on the look and language of popular lithographic advertising.
