Here a cameraman stands at the edge of Katmai, the Alaska Peninsula volcano whose neighboring vent, Novarupta, erupted in June 1912 in one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. W.A. Hesse was a motion picture photographer who worked in the region with the National Geographic Society's Katmai expeditions, which studied the eruption's aftermath and the steaming landscape of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Early cameras were heavy and hand-cranked, so filming in such remote, rugged country meant hauling equipment over difficult ground. The picture shows how the expedition brought the volcanic region to audiences who could never travel there.
