Love's Stratagem is a poster from Independent Moving Pictures, the company known as IMP that Carl Laemmle founded in 1909. It was one of the first American studios to put its players' names in advertising, a practice that helped create the star system. IMP merged into the Universal Film Manufacturing Company in 1912, so posters like this one come from the short-lived but influential years when the American film business was still taking shape. Look closely at the hand-drawn lettering and bold color blocks, which show how studios competed for attention on theater walls before film advertising was standardized.
