This poster advertises *The Sheik* (1921), the silent romance in which Rudolph Valentino plays a desert chieftain who abducts an English heiress played by Agnes Ayres. Adapted from Edith Maude Hull's 1919 novel and directed by George Melford, the film was a box-office hit that made Valentino a national sensation. Its portrayal of Arab characters drew criticism at the time and remains a common subject in film history, so the poster also shows how Hollywood packaged romance and the exotic in the early 1920s.
