This sheet is number 16 in a set of architectural drawings showing the front of the stage in a combined theater and hotel building in Richmond, Virginia. Mixed-use buildings like this were common in nineteenth-century American cities, with performance halls sharing a structure with lodgings and public rooms. Richmond's earlier Richmond theater burned in December 1811, killing dozens of audience members, and that disaster pushed American theater builders toward better exits, fireproofing, and stage design. The drawing, held in the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering collection, records the stage's construction at a level of detail that reveals how carefully such halls were planned.
