The picture shows the theater in Leipzig, the commercial and cultural center of the Kingdom of Saxony, at a time when the city was known for its opera, drama, and concert life. Leipzig's theaters drew audiences from across the region, and the building's street-front view captures the architecture that housed them in the late 1800s. The image is a photochrom, a color print made by photographing a scene and then hand-coloring stone lithographs from it. The process, developed in Switzerland, was widely used around 1900 to sell views of European cities and landmarks to travelers and armchair tourists.
