Philae, the island temple complex on the Nile near the first cataract, is the subject here, drawn by David Roberts on his 1838 to 1839 journey through Egypt and Nubia. The lithograph was printed by Louis Haghe and published in the second volume of *Egypt & Nubia* by F.G. Moon in London, appearing in parts between 1846 and 1849. Roberts's sketches made the temples of the Nile widely known to European readers, and his color plates helped shape how the British public pictured ancient Egypt. Haghe's stone printing preserves the warm tones and crumbling stonework that drew so many viewers to the series.
