What sets this portrait apart is its sitter, a bearded man in a light shirt whose name is not recorded, so his occupation or reputation cannot be confirmed. The picture is a carte de visite, a small albumen print pasted onto a card about the size of a calling card, a format that became popular in the early 1860s because it was cheap to make and easy to share. It comes from a New York studio associated with Mathew Brady, whose firm produced many portraits of prominent Americans during and after the Civil War. Sitters often traded these cards with friends or kept them in albums, so the format says a good deal about how people once exchanged their likenesses.
