This bronze shows a bearded man wrapped in a heavy draped cloak, and the record does not name him. The beard and loose mantle follow a long tradition in which Greek and Roman portraits signaled age, learning, and dignity, so sculptors used these features for poets, orators, and philosophers alike. Bronze was costly and durable, and the lost-wax casting method captured fine folds of fabric in detail. Its place on a board of writers suggests it was meant to honor a man of letters, though the record does not confirm that link.
