Shown seated and turned to the right in a head-and-shoulders view, Rebecca Latimer Felton appears in a portrait from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed many public figures in the early twentieth century. A Georgia writer and reformer who lived from 1835 to 1930, Felton spent decades campaigning for women's suffrage, rural causes and temperance. In November 1922 she became the first woman to sit in the United States Senate, though she served only one day after being appointed to fill a vacancy. The photograph's date range places it in the later years of her long public career.
