Shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned toward the right, this portrait depicts Samuel Jordan Kirkwood, a figure whose career was closely tied to Iowa. Born in 1813, Kirkwood served as the state's governor during the Civil War, later represented Iowa in the U.S. Senate, and in 1881 became Secretary of the Interior under President James A. Garfield. Portraits of public men were widely reproduced in the 1880s, so images like this gave supporters and newspaper readers a familiar face for someone who had guided Iowa through the war.
