Here the sitter is Samuel Adams, the Boston politician who helped lead colonial opposition to British taxation and rule before the Revolution, shown from the shoulders up and turned to the right. The picture reproduces a painting by John Singleton Copley, the Boston-born artist known for his portraits of colonial merchants and officials. Copley's likeness of Adams became one of the most recognized images of the revolutionary leader, and this photographic copy, probably made between 1870 and 1920, helped carry that face to later readers. Adams died in 1803, so the image preserves an appearance recorded more than a century earlier.
