In 1903, Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, sat on the south bank of the St. Marys River, facing its twin town of Sault Ste. Marie across the water in Ontario. The rapids there forced ships between Lake Superior and the lower lakes to pass through canals and locks, so the town's economy rested on shipping, freight handling, and the iron ore moving down from the Upper Peninsula mines. The Poe Lock, completed in 1896, was the newest and largest of the locks, and its traffic shaped daily life along the waterfront. Residents of the Soo knew their town first as a lock town, a place where boats waited, cargo changed hands, and the sound of the river was constant.
