This bird's-eye view lithograph takes in Chicago's waterfront from a high, angled vantage point, so the shoreline, its piers and the crowded blocks behind them read together as one working city. Currier & Ives issued many such views in the early 1890s, when Chicago was rebuilt after the 1871 fire and was growing into the leading rail and grain hub of the Midwest. The print was published in New York, a reminder that these city portraits were sold to buyers across the country who had never seen the place. Its colors and fine detail make it a useful record of how the city presented itself just before the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893.
