Drawn as a bird's-eye view, this hand-colored lithograph shows Chicago from above at a time when the city was still rebuilding after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Parsons & Atwater sketched and drew the design on stone, and the New York firm Currier & Ives published it around 1874, when the company was producing many city views for a broad public. The large sheet lets viewers trace the layout of streets and the lakefront across the city. Because the color was added by hand, individual impressions vary somewhat from copy to copy.
