Made in 1889 by the Chicago photographer L. M. Melander, whose studio stood at 208 East Ohio Street, this stereograph carries the title "Mother-in-law adjusting family difficulties." Cards like this were staged comic or genre scenes, meant to be viewed in pairs through a stereoscope in the parlor, a popular home entertainment in the late 1800s. The mother-in-law was a stock figure in the humor of the period, so the title points to a joke that audiences of the day would have recognized at once. The card's number, 41, shows it belonged to a numbered series that the studio sold to customers.
