Chicago was one of the last large cities on the route taken by Abraham Lincoln's funeral train, which carried his body from Washington to Springfield, Illinois, in the spring of 1865. The photograph, made by Chicago photographer S.M. Fassett, shows the railroad car fitted out for the mourning procession, with its draped exterior and formal presentation. Mourners lined the tracks and filled the streets in many cities along the way, and the car itself became one of the most recognizable emblems of the national grief that followed the assassination. The print is also notable as a rare local record of that moment, and it has been shown in the Library of Congress's Lincoln bicentennial exhibition.
