A specially decorated railroad car, photographed in Chicago in 1865, stands at the center of this view of Abraham Lincoln's funeral. The train carried the president's body from Washington to Springfield, Illinois, in the spring of that year, and Chicago was one of the stops where the public could file past the coffin. S.M. Fassett, a Chicago photographer, recorded the car, which shows how the nation marked his death with black drapery and ceremony as the procession moved west.
