Minneapolis was booming in the 1870s, and this bird's-eye view shows it from above, with the Mississippi River and the falls of St. Anthony shaping the town's layout. Hoffman drew the panorama, and the Chicago Lithographing Company printed it in color for the publishers George H. Ellsbury and V. Green, who issued it in Chicago around 1874. The city's economy then depended heavily on flour milling and lumber, industries powered by the falls, so the crowded riverfront is worth studying closely. Views like this were popular with local boosters and prospective residents, who could see streets, rail lines and factories laid out on a single sheet.
